“Goh,” Campbell said. “If you want your old job back, it’s yours. You never should have retired.”
Goh bowed to Campbell. “I shall accept that offer, sir. It appears you are going to need me much more than Governor Bachman ever did.”

Captain Martin didn’t know whether to feel relieved or scared out of her mind when the news came in. The Helo she had dispatched on a recon run to check out what was happening to the North reported that the Horde fleet had been destroyed by the Megalodon pack headed toward Dry Dock.
The bridge crew of The 2112 was cheering around her. Their cries of glee echoed off the walls of the bridge. Some of them had actually left their posts and were outright dancing. The destruction of the Horde was indeed a great victory and one the Fleet had never been able to accomplish on its own. Martin knew, though, that the same pack of Megalodons that had just slain the Fleet’s worst enemies would be bearing down on them soon enough. Too soon.
“Quiet!” Martin shouted. The celebration around her stopped at once as her crew came to attention waiting to hear what she had to say.
“Gary!” Martin snapped. “Status of northward contacts!”
Gary scurried to his station as the other members of the crew retook theirs as well. He plopped into the chair in front of the console and went to work. “Sub-surface contacts are lesser in number, captain, but they are headed this way.” Gary’s skin went white as he added, “ETA in ten minutes.”
“You heard the man, folks,” Captain Martin told the bridge crew. “The Horde may be gone—and while that’s a wonderful thing that I am sure none of us thought we would see in our lifetimes given the state of this world, our day isn’t over yet. A herd of giant sharks, the likes of which no one has ever encountered before, is on its way here . . . to us. “
Martin paused, allowing her words to sink in before she continued. “Gary, how many contacts remain?”
Gary coughed, struggling to speak, before he got his answer out. “My screen is showing eighteen, Captain.”
“Eighteen,” Martin repeated the number. “Eighteen, folks. We’ve lost all contact with the detachment of the Fleet that broke away in pursuit of the ships of the Horde who made a run at Dry Dock earlier today. I think it’s best to assume that both they and the ships they were after are also destroyed. The twenty-three vessels we have left, right here, right now, are all that remains of the Fleet. Those giant monsters on their way to us just eliminated an equal or larger sized fleet of Horde ships with minimal losses to their own numbers. As much as we may want to celebrate the destruction of the Horde, we’re trouble ladies and gentlemen . . . Big trouble.”
The faces of the crewmen surrounding her had lost their joy. Each and every one of them heard what she had said and knew it was true.
